Sunn O))) - Black One Review

albumcoversunn1.PNG

Imagine the shittest music you’ve ever heard. Now extend that it into a 20 minute song.

Once you’ve done that, you’re about 10% along the way to comprehending how bad ‘Sunn O)))’, a band popular in the doom/drone metal scene and their latest album ‘Black One’ is (the band is referred to as simply ’sunn’, the stupid sun symbol written in characters isn’t read).

I honestly don’t know where to start - The whole album is just a prolonged drone of distortion and random feedback noises. Every song sounds the same - literally. If watching fucking grass grow had a soundtrack, THIS would be it.

Words just won’t do the justice, so for starters, check out these three clips from three different songs on the album.

orthodox-caveman.mp3

candle-goat.mp3

cry-for-the-weeper.mp3

Let me remind you - that was THREE different songs. The shortest song on the album clocks at 8:04.

Winning the lottery would be easier than trying to guess which song is which if a random Sun
n clip was played to you.

Sunn O))) cloak their faces in shame of their own crappy music.

As I sat here writing this review, I just kept thinking ‘What kind of people would actually enjoy this’.

And as my eyes glanced over to the right of this page to the advertising column - it hit me when I saw these 2 ads:

Wife Having An Affair

Find out why so many women today cheat on their husbands

Lonely Sexy Wives

Sexy House Wives Online By You View Profiles 100% Free. Join Now

It’s apparent that Google scanned the keywords on this page, found ‘Sunn O)))’ and associated it with 2 key markets:

  • Males that listen to Sunn, whose wives have left them for someone who doesn’t listen to shitty music.
  • Males that listen to Sunn, who are looking for Lonely Sexy Wives since their own wives have left them to pursue an affair.

There you go. Now it’s easier for you to understand what kind of folks enjoy Sunn’s ‘Black One’.

This reviewer got 1/3 of the way through listening to ‘Black One’ before he couldn’t take any more.

It’s always interesting to see what other people think of the album. This guy seems to know his shit:

Its not… really… music…
this is… just noise, really. maybe it’d be usefull for an evil rpg soundtrack or something, but besides that… I’ve tried to find good in it, but I have to FORCE myself to listen to it everytime.

Clearly showing very emotional riffs…full of passion

I could have dropped my guitar 73 octaves, strummed a few dissonant chords then left it on the floor to feedback for 10 minutes to make this album.

I hope you’re proud Sunn O))) - you’ve officially earnt my first 10/10 turd rating.

I really have respect for this totally 100% serious blog that gives me the latest feedback on terrible albums. Your professional writing style and credibility ensures you are on the leading edge of terrible music.

Also, this sounds like the rock equivilent of Aphex Twin. For the elitists of rock music.

Well, at least SunnO))) is not as boring as Dream Theater’s albums

At least a 20 minute dream theater song is more than a prolonged drone.

I don’t think that sunn give a shit about you letting them to be proud of some 10 turds in your shitlist… moreover they are an icon for their niche as dream theatre for prog metal…. I suppose…
and atmospheric music isn’t something that stucks in your head… it’s written to summon emotions and associations…
I am a bit dissapointed by your review in fact…
But your manner of writing is just excellent….

Drone metal just appears as the ultimate antonym of progressive music to me, so it’s gonna be hard for me to appreciate. I’ve read what other people experience through listening to Sunn, and on many relistenings, it just hasn’t hit me.

what a funny writing style, but this is hardly real criticism. you seem to have no clue or idea of experimental music. and i dont mean any prog stuff by that.

I just figured I’d say that it’s obvious that you don’t know anything about ambient music. You’re deaf if you seriously think all of the songs sound the same.

I’d also like to congratulate you for listening to Britney Spears, DragonForce, Sum 41, Audioslave and Foo Fighters. You definitely know what sucks, and you listen to all of it.

haha, you try to stab back at me by searching for any possible artist in my top 50 that look gay. You didn’t seem to complement or mention any of the artists you thought were good.

I love how people can say the writer doesn’t understand experimental or creative music then continue to slate them for listening to audioslave…? 4 of the most influential musicians of our time….
Interesting criticism… and why do you read these pages if you have no interest in the style of music the admin appreciates? Lol. Interesting lives….
And for the record the 1st few Sunn songs i listened to I assumed must just be interludes on albums, however I was horrified after listening to an entire album…

“Drone metal just appears as the ultimate antonym of progressive music to me, so it’s gonna be hard for me to appreciate.”

does that mean that progressive music is only bout playing as complex as possible for you?

  15. admin said:

    Jan 15, 08 at 5:43 pm

No? It means it’s not the same boring drone and feedback with an occasional extra layer, that the music stays interesting and intriguing with time changes, different genres intergrated and technicality. If I wanted as complex as possible I’d be listening to Planet X.

your ears just havent been made for extreme minimalism.

  17. admin said:

    Jan 18, 08 at 3:17 pm

You’re right, my ears just block out any music of minimal value.

  18. LOL said:

minimalism and minimal value are two different things. besides that especially Black One is very various for a drone based record.

Well it seems you’re too arrogant to figure out the difference.

It’s okay, you can have fun in your circle of elitism, but in the real world…who really gives a fuck about what you say anyway?

The elitism shown here is making me laugh… ha..

If this is your definition of “atmospheric experimental music made to bring out emotion” i suggest these artists.

Porcupine Tree: Whole discography, but particularly “the sky moves sideways” and a few off “in absentia”
Radiohead: lots of songs off “ok computer”, “kid a” and “in rainbows”
    Scott Walker: “the drift”
    Sigur Ros

all artists with great atmospherics, but its usually left to a great atmospheric instrument like a synthesizer, not a detuned droning boring guitar

If you guys think Sunn are emotional and atmospheric, wow you guys must have a sense of emotion rivaling that of a funeral director.

i respect you for this man, music such as this (sorry shouldve said “music”) is so shit. its actually awful and talentless. i mean no one can actually like this. and if you do, your ognna look back at yourself in 10yrs time, and just think, “wow i listened to shit. what a little twat I was. how gay of me. ” its not cool, catchy, well written, clever, funny, technically advanced, well recorded or anything like that. it has no qualities of music. it is just audioshit.

Exactly! That’s why I listen to Sunn O))) constantly. If you don’t understand or like it, no need to get all pissy. Go listen to fun catchy music! Nothing wrong with clever popular music, it’s a fine choice. Kind of simple, but whatever. Some people like cheez whiz, some people like cutting themselves, to each his own.

And I’ve got to steal the name Audioshit. That’s fantastic. It’ll be in the style of Earth & Sunn O))), except slower and less complex. Our first EP will be 6 performances of 4′33″, and a hidden track that we forget to include.
