Slayer - Reign in Blood Review
Along with some of pioneering bands of thrash metal in the 80’s and 90’s, Slayer and their classic “Reign in Blood” is seen as one of the key thrash albums in the history of metal. Pfft. All the tremelo riffing is incredibly repetative and unoriginal and it’s hard to even realise when the song has ended.
“Angel of Death” is by far the greatest song on the album, and every other song kind of follows its structure. Infact, I could probably choose any song to ‘the greatest song’, they’re all so similar. That’s where it fails as an album, you become so weary listening to it all at once since your fed up or all the random solos and repetitive riffing. The only song which breaks this mould is Raining Blood, a classic in metal.
Of course, knobs will come and defend how good the album is.
- “The reviewer must be deaf if he can’t hear and appreciate the different riffs”.
- “The commenter is trying to claim a few different notes in tremelo and galloping riffs is sufficient to make it ‘good’ or ‘different’ “.
Of course there’s a literal difference in the songs, but you’re the fool if you enjoy it and try to defend the minute differences. Sure there’s a lot of riffs, which shift frequently, but they’re just recycled over and over.
Slayer fans: really smart, tough and cool.

Some people also cream their pants at ‘Kerries and Hannemans chaotic shredding’. Although there’s some cool wails and screams emulated with the whammy bar, the term chaotic is usually confused with random, unorganised and unappealing.
So maybe if you’re just getting into the thrash scene, it may seem like a good extreme metal album. Extremely fucking terrible.

Just because YOU say it’s bad, won’t make it bad for other people. I myself LOVE Slayer. I like the heavy guitars, the randomness of the solos and the dark-ish lyrics. It allows me to vent a bit.
I don’t just listen to Slayer, on the contrary. I also enjoy listening to some Bach, Liszt, Beethoven. As well as Louie Armstrong, the Chi-Lites. Even Coldplay, Radiohead. All the music I listen to depends on my mood. If I feel chaotic/confused, I’ll listen to Slayer.
So maybe you just haven’t been in a mood that makes Slayer sound good to you. Maybe you never will, but that’s just your opinion and like anyone else’s, it’s not wrong. It’s just personal.

It may have been good 20 years ago… but thrash metal to me just seem obsolete in lieu of newer metal which incorporates it and much more into the sound.
